Nominations will open on 14 August 2025 for the New Zealand Law Students Association (NZLSA) Executive roles for 2026. The NZLSA is responsible for representing the interests of law students nationwide - operating as the parent body of the regional Law Students Societies at each law school. Candidates will be elected at the NZLSA Annual General Meeting, at the Conference, held at the University of Auckland (and on Microsoft Teams) on 5 September, 9:15 AM. Candidates must be current law students to be eligible for these positions. Nominations can be made by completing the Google Form by 5 September 2025, 8:00 AM. You can also contact your regional Law Students Society President for more information about the NZLSA.
Eligibility: Must be a current law student (but need not be a student for the 2026 academic year) or an Executive Member of the NZLSA. Applications that do not meet these requirements will not be accepted. Candidates will be invited to speak to their nomination or appoint someone to speak on their behalf if they cannot be present at the AGM. This excludes candidates for the President Role. The term of office will commence three weeks from the election date. Please take note: Law student nominees must be in attendance at the AGM in order to be eligible for election as President.
PRESIDENT:
The President plays both an internal and external role in advancing the objectives of the NZLSA. The President obtains sponsorship from and builds strong relationships with stakeholders. The President manages the NZLSA Council and oversees all initiatives of the NZLSA including its advocacy, competitions and education portfolios.
Core responsibilities:
Being the face of the NZLSA
Managing the sponsorship portfolio of the NZLSA
Chairing meetings of the NZLSA Council
Supporting the NZLSA Executive
Mentoring the Law Student Society/Association Presidents
Liaising with Justice Glazebrook (and her Honour’s successor) as patron of the NZLSA
Interacting with the Law School Deans as the collective vice patrons of the NZLSA
Maintaining the industry relationships and alumni network of the NZLSA.

ADMINSTRATIVE VICE-PRESIDENT
The AVP ensures the smooth running of NZLSA governance by managing records, correspondence, and compliance with the Constitution.
Core responsibilities:
Maintain accurate minutes, records, and correspondence and a working knowledge of meeting procedure.
Prepare and distribute meeting agendas and documents within required timeframes.
Ensure meetings and actions comply with the Constitution.
Maintain the NZLSA contact list and relationships with non-affiliated representative groups.
Oversee the archive of NZLSA documents and resources.
Coordinate official NZLSA publications with the Marketing VP.
Provide a written Annual Report on Constitution-related duties at the AGM.
Organises and books accommodation and flights for council meetings.

TREASURER
The Treasurer manages NZLSA’s finances, ensuring accurate record-keeping, legal compliance, and transparent financial reporting.
Core responsibilities:
Receive, record, and deposit all NZLSA income in accordance with the Finance Policy.
Arrange prompt payment of NZLSA debts.
Maintain accurate financial records using Xero for bookkeeping and invoicing.
Ensure compliance with the Charities Act 2005 and Charitable Trusts Act 1957.
Prepare and present interim accounts to Council and Executive meetings.
Provide a detailed written Annual Financial Report at the AGM.

EDUCATION VICE-PRESIDENT
The EVP develops and implements NZLSA’s educational policy, advocates for students’ academic interests, and fosters strong relationships with law schools.
Core responsibilities:
Develop and uphold NZLSA’s educational policy.
Raise educational issues affecting New Zealand law students at Council meetings.
Support law student society education officers with their initiatives.
Oversee and maintain strong relationships with the Council of Legal Education Representatives.
Organise and oversee NZLSA educational initiatives.
Liaise with all law schools and, where required, the New Zealand Law Students’ Journal.

COMPETITIONS VICE-PRESIDENT
The CVP manages all aspects of NZLSA competitions, from sponsorship and logistics to overseeing national and international representation.
Core responsibilities:
Promote competitions among law students nationwide.
Support and advise law student society competition representatives.
Ensure competition rules and information are clear and accessible.
Oversee national competitions at the NZLSA Conference.
Manage logistics and representation at the ALSA Conference.
Actively contribute to the NZLSA Rules Committee.
Maintain a working knowledge of meeting procedure.

MARKETING VICE-PRESIDENT
The MVP manages NZLSA’s brand, communications, and online presence, ensuring the organisation is visible, accessible, and engaging.
Core responsibilities:
Promote NZLSA’s work through campaigns and publications.
Manage and update the NZLSA website and social media channels.
Oversee the production of promotional materials in collaboration with the AVP.
Collaborate with the EVP to create educational content.
Maintain a consistent and professional brand image.

CONFERENCE CONVENOR
The Conference Convenor organises the Annual Conference, managing everything from competitions to social events and logistics.
Core responsibilities:
Prepare a Conference budget and keep accurate financial records in collaboration with the Treasurer.
Coordinate the NZLSA National Law Students’ Competitions Championships.
Arrange social events, including the closing dinner.
Organise accommodation, venues, and guest speakers.
Ensure smooth delivery of all Conference activities.

COUNCIL OF LEGAL EDUCATION REPRESENTATIONS
CLE Representatives are the NZLSA’s voice on legal education matters, working with the Council of Legal Education to represent the interests of law students nationwide.
Core responsibilities:
Represent New Zealand law students on the Council of Legal Education.
Attend NZLSA Council, AGM, and Special General Meetings.
Report on legal education developments to the NZLSA.
Maintain strong relationships with law student societies and the EVP.
